Entre l\u2019augmentation des v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques, le stockage de l\u2019\u00e9nergie en r\u00e9seaux \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle et la transition vers une \u00e9nergie plus renouvelable, la volont\u00e9 de d\u00e9velopper des batteries plus efficaces et plus durables n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi forte.<\/p>\n<p>Cr\u00e9er des batteries \u00e0 la fois longue dur\u00e9e et plus performantes n\u2019est pas chose ais\u00e9e, et il reste quelques probl\u00e8mes \u00e0 surmonter avant de pouvoir y parvenir. Quand la batterie est en charge, les ions se d\u00e9placent vers l\u2019\u00e9lectrode n\u00e9gative. Quand la batterie est utilis\u00e9e, les ions circulent vers l\u2019\u00e9lectrode positive, ce qui cr\u00e9e un courant \u00e9lectrique.<\/p>\n<p>Avec les batteries ordinaires, le processus qui g\u00e9n\u00e8re une charge \u00e9lectrique ne peut se produire qu\u2019une fois, et dans une seule direction. Mais avec les batteries rechargeables au lithium, le processus chimique est r\u00e9versible, ce qui permet d\u2019utiliser la batterie plusieurs fois.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][difl_divider separetor_type=\u00a0\u00bbno\u00a0\u00bb divider_line_color=\u00a0\u00bb#000000&Prime; divider_line_width=\u00a0\u00bb1px\u00a0\u00bb _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb][\/difl_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb header_3_font=\u00a0\u00bbNoto Sans|600|||||||\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3>Pourquoi le dioxyde de titane ?<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p>Le dioxyde de titane (TiO<sub>2<\/sub>) a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 son utilit\u00e9 pour une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019applications, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de remplacer les \u00e9lectrodes des nouvelles batteries ou d\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le processus de charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abCertaines propri\u00e9t\u00e9s du TiO<sub>2<\/sub><span>\u00a0<\/span>sont int\u00e9ressantes dans le contexte des batteries rechargeables\u00bb, explique le Professeur Colm O\u2019Dwyer, de l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Cork, en Irlande, qui a men\u00e9 des recherches sur le sujet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abPour commencer, le dioxyde de titane permet une r\u00e9action r\u00e9versible avec le lithium, et celle-ci est relativement stable par rapport au graphite contenant du lithium que l\u2019on peut trouver dans les \u00e9lectrolytes de certaines batteries. Ces tubes minuscules, dont la largeur est \u00e9gale \u00e0 un milli\u00e8me de poil humain, sont obtenus par une m\u00e9thode de brassage au cours duquel les particules sont allong\u00e9es pour former un tube.<\/p>\n<p>Au lieu d\u2019utiliser le traditionnel graphite, les chercheurs ont plac\u00e9 dans l\u2019\u00e9lectrode n\u00e9gative d\u2019une batterie au lithium un gel contenant les nanotubes. Ce processus a acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 la r\u00e9action chimique qui se produit dans l\u2019\u00e9lectrolyte, cr\u00e9ant ainsi une batterie qui peut \u00eatre recharg\u00e9e \u00e0 70 % de sa capacit\u00e9 en deux minutes seulement, et dont la dur\u00e9e de vie est de 20 ans. Cette m\u00e9thode pourrait r\u00e9duire consid\u00e9rablement les d\u00e9chets caus\u00e9s par les batteries.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, quand une batterie est utilis\u00e9e, les mat\u00e9riaux qu\u2019elle contient commencent \u00e0 se d\u00e9sagr\u00e9ger, ce qui provoque une perte d\u2019efficacit\u00e9. Mais comme le Professeur O\u2019Dwyer et son \u00e9quipe l\u2019ont d\u00e9couvert l\u2019an dernier, quand on ajoute du dioxyde de titane sous forme poreuse \u00e0 une batterie au lithium, ses composants restent intacts, m\u00eame apr\u00e8s qu\u2019elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 charg\u00e9e et d\u00e9charg\u00e9e plus de 5 000 fois.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abOn appelle \u201copale inverse\u201d l\u2019architecture en 3D des nanoparticules de la phase rutile du dioxyde de titane. Elle est form\u00e9e en remplissant des opales artificielles con\u00e7ues en laboratoire avec les composants actifs d\u2019une batterie\u00bb, explique le Professeur O\u2019Dwyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les structures en opales inverses sont pr\u00e9sentes dans la nature. Ces structures p\u00e9riodiquement poreuses sont \u00e0 l\u2019origine des parties color\u00e9es et iris\u00e9es que l\u2019ont peut voir sur les ailes des papillons, les plumes des paons, les structures exo-squelettiques des charan\u00e7ons et l\u2019aphrodite de mer, pour n\u2019en citer que quelques exemples. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Dans une batterie, la forme poreuse du dioxyde de titane est conductrice, et ce sans y ajouter les additifs actuellement utilis\u00e9s dans les \u00e9lectrodes des batteries commerciales.<\/p>\n<p>Par ailleurs, le lithium r\u00e9agit efficacement avec la structure poreuse, ce qui signifie que la batterie se recharge rapidement.<\/p>\n<p>Les batteries au lithium qui contiennent du TiO<sub>2<\/sub><span>\u00a0<\/span>sont parfois appel\u00e9es batteries au lithium \u00e0 base de titanate de lithium. Or les chercheurs ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 exp\u00e9rimenter avec d\u2019autres m\u00e9taux dits \u201cplurivalents\u201d : chaque fois qu\u2019un ion se d\u00e9place, deux \u00e9lectrons ou plus sont transf\u00e9r\u00e9s. Cette r\u00e9action plus efficace pourrait multiplier par deux ou trois le stockage de la batterie.<\/p>\n<p>Le seul probl\u00e8me est de d\u00e9terminer quels mat\u00e9riaux utiliser comme composants de ces batteries.<\/p>\n<p>Des recherches publi\u00e9es en septembre dernier par une \u00e9quipe comprenant le Dr Benjamin Morgan, du d\u00e9partement de chimie de l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Bath, en Angleterre, r\u00e9v\u00e8lent qu\u2019en rempla\u00e7ant l\u2019\u00e9lectrode n\u00e9gative par du dioxyde de titane, on peut faire fonctionner une batterie plurivalente.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, le dioxyde de titane peut \u00eatre adapt\u00e9 dans le but d\u2019introduire volontairement des d\u00e9fauts. Ceux-ci cr\u00e9ent un espace que peuvent combler des ions plurivalents comme le magn\u00e9sium et l\u2019aluminium, provoquant ainsi le transfert de plusieurs \u00e9lectrons \u00e0 chaque fois.<\/p>\n<p>Avec ce processus, une batterie pourrait stocker plus d\u2019\u00e9nergie qu\u2019une batterie au lithium de taille \u00e9quivalente.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abIl reste un certain nombre d\u2019obstacles techniques \u00e0 surmonter, notamment trouver des mat\u00e9riaux qui feraient office d\u2019\u00e9lectrodes efficaces pour les ions plurivalents, a expliqu\u00e9 le Dr Morgan. \u00c0 long terme, cette preuve de concept est une possible avanc\u00e9e vers le d\u00e9veloppement de batteries \u201cau-del\u00e0 du lithium\u201d, dont les performances seront sup\u00e9rieures.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9voquant les recherches men\u00e9es sur les nouveaux composants de batteries qui pourraient avoir plusieurs applications \u2013 des appareils mobiles au stockage d\u2019\u00e9nergie \u2013, le Dr Morgan a pr\u00e9cis\u00e9 que les batteries \u00e0 rendement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 deviendront \u00abde plus en plus importantes \u00e0 mesure que nous abandonnerons les combustibles fossiles au profit de sources d\u2019\u00e9nergie plus \u00e9cologiques.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][difl_divider separetor_type=\u00a0\u00bbno\u00a0\u00bb divider_line_color=\u00a0\u00bb#000000&Prime; divider_line_width=\u00a0\u00bb1px\u00a0\u00bb _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb][\/difl_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb header_3_font=\u00a0\u00bbNoto Sans|600|||||||\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<h3>Demain<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u00a0\u00bb4.27.4&Prime; _module_preset=\u00a0\u00bbdefault\u00a0\u00bb global_colors_info=\u00a0\u00bb{}\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019un des avantages d\u2019utiliser le dioxyde de titane dans les batteries de demain est qu\u2019il est pr\u00e9sent en abondance.<\/p>\n<p>Par ailleurs, \u00abla forme du TiO<sub>2<\/sub>, apr\u00e8s sa r\u00e9action r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e avec le lithium, est tr\u00e8s stable dans de nombreuses \u00e9lectrolytes de batterie, ce qui favorise une longue dur\u00e9e de vie\u00bb, explique O\u2019Dwyer.<\/p>\n<p>Mais certains d\u00e9fis restent \u00e0 surmonter. \u00abEn tant qu\u2019anode (\u00e9lectrode positive), le TiO<sub>2<\/sub><span>\u00a0<\/span>a un voltage plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 que le graphite actuellement utilis\u00e9.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Les faibles voltages sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement privil\u00e9gi\u00e9s car ils permettent de maximiser le courant de sortie de la batterie. \u00abMais ce n\u2019est pas n\u00e9cessaire pour toutes les batteries rechargeables.
