Industri\u00eble elektrolyse-installaties zijn echter energie-intensief en vergen zware investeringen. <\/p>\n<p>Om deze methode te vervangen, pasten Canadese en Franse onderzoekers een natuurlijk mechanisme toe dat bekend staat als \u201cfotokatalyse\u201d. In een gezamenlijke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0927024820303020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studie<\/a> an het Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) professor My Ali El Khakani en een team van L\u2019Institut de chimie et proc\u00e9d\u00e9s pour l\u2019\u00e9nergie, l\u2019environnement et la sant\u00e9 (ICPEES), ontwikkelde het team speciaal ontworpen en gestructureerde elektroden die watermoleculen splitsen in zuurstof en waterstof door gebruik te maken van het licht van de zon. <\/p>\n<p>TiO<sub>2<\/sub> was de sleutel tot de ontsluiting van deze wetenschappelijke vooruitgang. TiO<sub>2<\/sub> is een halfgeleider waarvan bekend is dat hij lichtgevoelig is voor UV-licht, maar dit is slechts 5% van de straling van de zon. <\/p>\n<p>Het team van onderzoekers werkte aan de atomaire samenstelling van TiO<sub>2<\/sub> om de lichtgevoeligheid ervan uit te breiden tot zichtbaar licht, wat de productie mogelijk zou kunnen maken van elektroden die tot 50% van het zonlicht kunnen absorberen. Dit zou de productie van \u201cgroene\u201d waterstof zonder elektrolyse veel effici\u00ebnter kunnen maken. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Green\u2019 hydrogen is often called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikescott\/2020\/12\/14\/green-hydrogen-the-fuel-of-the-future-set-for-50-fold-expansion\/?sh=2801771a6df3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel of the future<\/a>. It is a building block to unlocking the decarbonisation of industry and heavy-duty vehicles which is necessary to meet ambitious climate targets.
