The TDMA welcomes the UK Committee on Toxicology’s report advising on the safety of titanium dioxide in food.

The United Kingdom (UK) Committee on Toxicology published their opinion on the safety of food grade titanium dioxide (TiO2), known as E171 on 27 August 2024. The Committee concluded that based on available evidence of current dietary exposures of TiO2, it is “unlikely that there would be a risk to health”.

The TDMA provided evidence to the Committee through the UK Food Standards Agency, helping to create a clear picture of the use of TiO2 in food.

The TDMA welcomes the opinion as this is great news for science. With increasing scrutiny today, it is essential that regulators have access to scientifically accurate evidence when making decisions. We are grateful for the UK Committee on Toxicology for providing this clarity about the use of TiO2 in food for both consumers and regulators. We will continue to work with similar bodies around the World to help people understand the safety of TiO2 and ensure it can continue to be used in a broad range of applications where it provides unique and essential properties that could not be provided by any other substance.

A full risk assessment from the UK’s Food Standards Agency is expected to be published at the end of September 2024 to provide further details.
